Equinox Phenomenon

  1. What is the september equinox?

An equinox is an astronomical phenomenon when the sun's daily pseudo-trajectory is at the equator. Equinoxes comes from Latin, namely equinox from the word aequus which has the same meaning. Then the word nox which means night. Then basically it can be understood that the equinox phenomenon causes day and night to have the same time. When the equinox phenemone occurs, the sun when viewed from the equator will rise exactly to the east and set exactly to the west.

  1. The origin of the equinox

People have tracked the movement of the sun for thousands of years, often incorporating equinoxes into cultural and religious traditions. There are also many ancient monuments marking the equinoxes. For example, during the equinox at the Hindu temple complex of Angkor Wat in Cambodia, the sun rises directly above its central temple. The complex, built between AD 1113 and 1150 is the largest religious monument in the world.

  1. When does the equinox occur

The equinox occurs twice a year (the March equinox can occur between March 19 to 21, while the September equinox can occur between September 21 to 24) when the Earth's axis is not inclination with respect to the Sun, and the center of the Sun is in the same plane as Earth's equator.

In Indonesia, the September equinox is expected to occur on Saturday, September 23 at 08.30 WIB/09.30 WITA/10.30 WIT. When this phenomenon occurs, the distance between the Sun and Earth reaches 150,147,520 kilometers. This event also marks the occurrence of autumn in the northern hemisphere and spring in the southern hemisphere.

  1. Equinox Features

  1. When the equinox phenomenon occurs, the sun and the Earth have the closest distance which consequently in the tropics around the equator will get maximum solar irradiation.

  2. The increase in air temperature is not too extreme or drastic and this phenomenon does not last for a long time.

  3. Day and night will have the same time which is 12 hours each.

  1. Aurora Borealis

After the September equinox passes, the chances of seeing the aurora borealis increase for those in northern hemisphere latitudes. According to NASA, the equinoxes are the prime time to view the aurora borealis because geomagnetic activity is twice as likely to occur in spring and fall.

  1. EQUINOX INTERESTING FACTS

For Mexicans, equinoxes are not just an ordinary astronomical phenomenon. The phenomenon that occurs every March and September is interpreted as a sacred tradition since the Mayans. They believe that the vertical position of the sun during the equinox phenomenon can gather positive energy that is able to ward off evil spirits. Every year, thousands of tourists and locals come to Teotihuacan. They are willing to climb the stairs to get to the top of the pyramid.
