NATIONAL BATIK DAY 2023

  • The history of the establishment of National Batik Day

Batik was first introduced to the international world by President Suharto during a UN conference. Indonesian batik was registered for intangible cultural heritage (ICH) status through the UNESCO office in Jakarta by the office of the Coordinating Minister for People's Welfare representing the government and the Indonesian batik community, on September 4, 2008. On October 2, 2009 national batik was designated by the United Nations of Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) as intangible cultural heritage. At that time the 4th session of the Intergovernmental Committee on Intangible Cultural Heritage by UNESCO was held in Abu Dhabi. The moment of determination was initiated by the 6th President of Indonesia, Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono (SBY) who made October 2 as National Batik Day. This provision is contained in Presidential Decree (Keppres) Number 33 of 2009 concerning National Batik Day issued on November 17, 2009, reported from the Tajinan Malangkab page. Through the Presidential Decree, the Ministry of Home Affairs then issued Circular Number 003.3/10132/SJ concerning the Use of Batik Clothes in the framework of National Batik Day. Through the letter, the Ministry of Home Affairs appealed to all pegawai in central, provincial, and district governments to wear batik every National Batik Day.

  • Meaning/Purpose of National Batik Day

Reporting from the Ministry of Education and Culture page, batik is the glue of the nation as well as a symbol of unity. By wearing batik, there are no more social strata, rich or poor, because batik shows togetherness. According to Setkab in the Ministry of Education and Culture, National Batik Day is a way to maintain the nation's identity. Similarly, wearing batik is not only for the commemoration of National Batik Day.

Through this commemoration, the cultural heritage of batik will be increasingly global and the Indonesian people must have the confidence to wear batik as an effort to care for Indonesia's cultural heritage. National Batik Day is not only to strengthen the identity of the Indonesian nation, but also to improve the welfare of the community through the batik industry.

  • Batik dispute between Malaysia and Indonesia

Many feuds between Malaysia and Indonesia over culture and cultural heritage are contested. Malaysia once claimed batik was theirs. Polemics also arose due to the claims of neighboring countries to this batik. The similarity of cultural cultures between Indonesia and Malaysia is one of the seeds causing disputes related to the struggle for property rights. The same historical lines and language similarities are other causes. Batik is not the only culture that Malaysia is trying to fight over. There are still other cultural heritages such as Pendet Dance.
