THE SCIENTIST FROM INDONESIA

Hello Udayana &; Indonesia, Greetings Rise!

Warta Penalaran is back to invite friends to know more about the scientist from Indonesia in the field of Astronomy, namely Prof. Dr. Mezak Arnold Ratag. Let's see it together!

(Prof. Dr. Mezak Arnold Ratag)

  1. Educational history of Prof. Dr. Mezak Arnold Ratag

Prof. Dr. Mezak Arnold Ratag or familiarly called Mezak was born in Malang on September 24, 1962 as the third child of Prof. Alexander Ratag and Grietje Kawengian. His elementary and junior high school education both studied at the IKIP Manado Laboratory. In August 1980 he was selected as an exemplary student at the high school level of North Sulawesi Province and subsequently as one of the three exemplary students at the national level in 1980.

A few months before his graduation at SMA Negeri 1 Manado in June 1981, through the Perintis II selection program, he was exempted from the college entrance screening examination and accepted as a student of the Bandung Institute of Technology (ITB). After completing the entire 9-semester study program in less than four years through guidance by Prof. Bambang Hidayat, in October 1985 he graduated as a Bachelor of Astronomy dengan predikat cum laude. Kemudian Universitas Kerajaan Belanda di Groningen, Rijksuniversiteit te Groningen Exempted him from having to take doctoral examinations (masters) and allowed him to directly enter the doctoral program in 1988. Under the guidance of Prof. Dr. Stuart Pottasch, Mezak Ratag obtained his doctorate (summos honoris) in June 1991 with a dissertation entitled “A Study of Galactic Bulge Planetary Nebula”.

  1. HasiThe work of Prof. Dr. Mezak Arnold Ratag

(Nebula Planeter di Alam Semesta yang bernama Nebula Heliks)

Mezak has presented and published more than one hundred national and international scientific papers. More than 100 new planetary nebulae (PNs) have been discovered and published with partners. In the catalogue of discoveries of the Planetary Nebula published by the Strasbourg Observatory, a large number of them are named after Mezak and the names of his partners. More than 100 international citations about his scientific works can be found in various international journals, books, and proceedings. A number of books have been written, namely Climate Change, Atmospheric Dynamics, Climate System Modeling, Aeronautical Meteorological Dictionary, Solar Activity and Earth's Climate Variations. In 1999, Mezak reaped the fruits of hard work by becoming a lecturer at the ITB Masters Program and Postgraduate Doctoral Program for Atmospheric Dynamics, Monsoon, Global Climatology, Climate Change, Climate, and Extreme Weather courses. Not only that, he also became a guest lecturer at a number of universities and institutes in the United States, Australia, Japan, the Netherlands, Italy, India, Thailand, Taiwan, and Malaysia.

Mezak's name has been immortalized in 120 planetary nebula clusters, including the Ratag-Ziljstra-Pottasch-Menzies and Ratag-Pottasch clusters, which he helped discover. He also received top honors for his pioneering work in climate modeling. And also he received the Satyalancana Wirakarya award from the President of the Republic of Indonesia for his services and success in conducting research and making climate models that are successfully applied to climate and weather forecasting. In 2001, the President of the Republic of Indonesia appointed Mezak as the Principal Research Expert and Professor in the fields of Astronomy and Astrophysics.
