WORLD NO TOBACCO DAY
PRESS RELEASE
SOCIAL AND ENVIRONMENTAL ZONES - WORLD NO TOBACCO DAY
Reporting from the World Health Organization (WHO) page , World No Tobacco Day (WNTD) was first proposed by WHO member countries in 1987. Tobacco is very dangerous for human health from the process of planting it to post-consumption waste. According to WHO records, the tobacco industry has a huge impact on the environment, including: 600 million trees are cut down to make cigarettes, 84 million tons of carbon dioxide emissions are released into the air, which increases global temperatures. 22 billion tons of water are used to make cigarettes. Tobacco kills more than 8 million every year. Until now, World No Tobacco Day (WNTD) is commemorated every year on May 31.
On World No Tobacco Day, WHO is working with global health partners and governments around the world to organize activities aimed at educating the public about the dangers of smoking and encouraging smokers to quit. Every year World No Tobacco Day is commemorated with the same tradition, namely the movement of fasting smoking for 24 hours but with a different theme each year. The theme of No Tobacco Day in 2023 is "We need food, not tobacco". With this theme, it is hoped that there will be increased awareness about alternative opportunities for tobacco farmers and encourage the cultivation of sustainable and nutritious crops that contribute to the global food crisis. In addition, World No Tobacco Day also highlights the need for tighter regulation of tobacco products, including increased tobacco taxes, a ban on tobacco advertising, increased health warning labels on tobacco packaging, and other measures to protect the public from the dangers of smoking.
Tobacco is often used in a variety of ways and various industries. The most common use of tobacco is for the production of cigarettes and chewing tobacco. Smoking is a very dangerous habit for human health. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, smoking is 90% of the causes of death caused by lung cancer. In addition to cancer, smoking can also increase the possibility of disorders to diseases of the heart, blood vessels, digestive tract, skin, to reproductive health. In addition to the above dangers, smoking also has a negative impact on the health of people around smokers, who are exposed to cigarette smoke passively. Secondhand smoke can cause respiratory problems, respiratory infections, and increase the risk of cardiovascular disease in those exposed.
In addition to cigarette production materials, tobacco is also used in the manufacture of alcoholic beverages, chewing gum, and syrup. Some food and beverage products use tobacco extract as an additive to give it a distinctive taste or aroma. The use of tobacco for various preparations certainly has a direct or indirect impact on the environment. The impact of tobacco use on the environment includes causing air and water pollution because the content of small particles contained in processed tobacco products can settle in the air and dissolve in water. In addition, the production of processed tobacco also requires the use of large natural resources such as water, wood, and energy. This intensive production process will result in greenhouse gas emissions that contribute to climate change.
Therefore, the commemoration of World No Tobacco Day is an opportunity to educate the public about the dangers of consumptive attitudes towards processed tobacco products, especially cigarettes, for example by supporting smokers who want to quit smoking. By campaigning for World No Tobacco Day, it is hoped that global awareness will be formed about the impact of smoking and encourage people to take better action on their health and those around them.
